Skilled Nursing Dementia Services

Bristol, a secure dementia neighborhood in The Keller Center at Clark on Franklin, is a safe and comfortable home for residents who need a high level of personal and medical care. There are three households in Bristol. Each is comprised of eight to ten rooms surrounding a common area that is used for dining and recreation. There is also a large recreation room with a full kitchen, piano and large screen television for movies and other events. Bristol has a total of twenty-one private rooms and six semi-private rooms.

Staff members are assigned to the same household each shift facilitating relationships with residents and family members. Clark does not use agency personnel, which adds to the consistency of care.

The recreational staff members that work in Bristol have specialized training in creating activities for residents with progressed dementia. While it appears that the residents and staff are just having fun and they are the activities are developed to meet specific goals. Some may be geared to evoke pleasant memories; others are created to help maintain physical abilities; still others promote a feeling of success.

Creative story telling is a good example. A small group of residents gather around a flip chart of a large, interesting picture. A staff member asks open-ended questions about the picture, and together they write a story. This activity spurs creative thinking; ensures success because all answers are correct; generates a sense of belonging and focuses attention on a positive endeavor.

Programming is based on the abilities of the residents. Some of the regularly scheduled events include Music & Motion (an exercise class), Bible study, home life activities (such as baking), The Friends Swim Club, Red Hat Society and individual activities.

Seasonal programming includes the Bristol Garden Club, summer barbeques, pumpkin painting, trips to The Meijer Garden to see the butterfly and holiday exhibits as well as making projects to include in the annual Clark Craft Bazaar. There are also family events such as the annual Fallsburg Park picnic and Holiday Party.

The Keller Center is Medicare and Medicaid certified. Daily fees include nursing care, rehabilitation services if residents are participating in short term therapy, assistance with activities of daily living, three daily meals, snacks, full room cleaning daily, weekly laundry, satellite television, and all utilities except telephone. For residents entering the Keller Center directly from the general community, there is no application fee and no residency agreement fee.
