Skilled Nursing Care

"I feel that the capacity to care is the thing which gives life its deepest significance."

Pablo Casals

The residents who live in the Keller Center skilled nursing neighborhoods at Clark need three types of care. They are:

  • Long-term residents who have unstable or chronic conditions that require substantial daily assistance.

  • Short-term residents who are receiving rehabilitation therapy and nursing care to recover from acute diseases, injuries or surgeries. Rehabilitation services are provided by physical and occupational therapists as well as speech/language pathologists.

  • Long-term or short-term residents with significant dementia who pose a risk of wandering. Additional information about the secure Bristol household is available in Dementia Services.

The Keller Center has 111 Medicare and Medicaid licensed nursing beds and encompasses portions of two floors. When it was constructed in 1995, it introduced what was then a revolutionary design. Today the “neighborhood” concept is the current trend, because it fosters a smaller, friendlier atmosphere.

There are four neighborhoods in The Keller Center: Epworth, Oxford, Aldersgate and Bristol. Within each of the neighborhoods are three households with eight to ten rooms clustered around a central area that is used for dining and recreation. The vast majority of accommodations are private.

Each floor has its own large, well-stocked recreation area, complete with a full kitchen, large screen television and locations for the specialized computer program, It’s Never 2 Late. Families wishing to plan their own special events are welcome to reserve these rooms.

Staff members are assigned to the same household each shift facilitating relationships with residents and family members. Clark does not use agency personnel, which adds to the consistency of care.

The Keller Center has a full-time, certified recreational therapist and support staff. They plan and implement group as well as individual social and recreational events. Favorites include special meals such as barbeques, chair exercise classes, Bible Study, musical performances, visits from school children, ice cream socials and crafts. Keller Center residents are also invited to participate in Sunday services and general Clark activities.

Daily fees include nursing care, rehabilitation services if residents are participating in short term therapy, assistance with activities of daily living, three daily meals, snacks, full room cleaning daily, weekly laundry, satellite television, and all utilities except telephone. For residents entering the Keller Center directly from the general community, there is no application fee and no residency agreement fee.
