COVID-19 Update: May 22, 2020

May 22, 2020 - 4:00 p.m.

EXECUTIVE ORDER

In compliance with Executive Order 2020-95 we implemented changes to the care management of COVID-19 positive and symptomatic assisted living and skilled nursing residents. The order established additional and new protocols stating long-term care facilities (which include assisted living environments) must transfer symptomatic and COVID-19 affected residents to a dedicated unit (this can be within their community), to a regional hub, or hospital.

Last evening, under the direction of our Medical Director, Dr. Jim Passinault, and our Keller Lake primary attending physician, Dr. Betsy Neubig, we transferred 10 Keller Lake-Oxford Manor assisted living residents to area acute care hospitals. At the time, most of the residents were not showing symptoms of COVID-19. We are collaborating with the acute care hospitals to have medically stable residents return to a designated COVID-19 unit at Keller Lake-Oxford Manor. The moves will take place as soon as reasonably possible and are predicated on securing enhanced medical staffing and intense sanitizing of rooms and common areas. We are working directly with medical and nursing leadership at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s and Spectrum Health Butterworth on these transition plans and enhanced medical staffing.

Moving forward, we will continue to actively evaluate future symptomatic and COVID-19 positive residents at Franklin and Keller Lake to determine their medical stability and make the determination to keep the resident in a designated unit at Clark or transfer to an area acute care hospital. All decisions will be guided by our medical director, Dr. Passinault, Dr. Neubig, collaboration with acute care hospital leadership and the Kent County Health Department. In addition, we will follow the regulatory guidance from the Governor’s office, the Michigan Department of Community Health, the CDC and CMS. All decisions will be clearly communicated to residents and their designated emergency contact as soon as practical.

We are grateful to our dedicated staff as they navigate the ever-changing landscape of COVID-19 and to our residents and families for their resiliency, understanding and continued support.
