Clark resident after receiving her first dose of the COVID-19 Vaccine
We are thrilled to share the Moderna vaccine has been given to over 400 Clark residents and staff. We completed the administration of the 2nd dose the first week of March! We are grateful to Walgreens for the excellent coordination they’ve provided at our clinics. The vaccine brings new hope to our community that we will soon be able to resume more normalcy as our residents and staff become protected from COVID-19.
The vaccine works through a messenger RNA system (mRNA). The use of mRNA is not unique in medicine and has been used in many other forms of medicine delivery. While the COVID-19 vaccine is new, this method is not.
mRNA is not a live virus, but is a synthetically created recipe that tells our body to make the antibodies that would kill the virus if we are exposed.
Shortly after vaccination, the body also kills that mRNA. It does not remain in the body once antibodies are starting to be created. It tricks the body into thinking it’s exposed to COVID-19 and therefore creates the proper “armies” to fight it off.
The COVID-19 vaccine is especially important for older adults as they are at a greater risk of requiring hospitalization if diagnosed with COVID-19. Certain medical conditions can also increase this risk. Clark’s Medical Director, Dr. James Passinault explains why getting the vaccine is so important and how it works:
